Where Weve Been Taylorville was founded in 1839 specifically to be the seat of Christian County. Settlers, arriving since 1818, rose to the challenge, transforming a useless swamp rippled by tall grass into one of the richest agricultural regions on earth. "Black Gold" guided the countys destiny from the 1890s to about 1950, when Taylorville was essentially a coal mining town. Larger than life personalities populate the historic tableaux: a Nobel Prize winner for modern medicines Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), an Olympic gold medalist in basketball and Horatio Vandeveer, a life-long friend of Abraham Lincoln. Where We Are Join players from all over the world at "Little Dodge City" and duck paintball splatters! Enjoy country legends on stage at Nashville North USA. All year round you will find festivals and special events: the persimmon festival, Chillifest, garden walks, agricultural fairs, and events showcasing artisans and chefs. As the "Christmas Capital of Illinois," Taylorville celebrates with fantastic brilliantly-lighted displays at Christmas in the Park, special music events, an authentic British-style high tea, and a tour of festively-trimmed homes.
