The dynamic Village of Tinley Park calls south suburban Chicago home—a strategic location providing residents and visitors with access to the unmatched cultural, entertainment, recreational and educational opportunities of Metropolitan Chicago within a short 25-mile trip. This Chicago Southwest regional hub is ideally situated in the midst of Chicago’s fine transportation network, composed of major expressways, international airports, and commuter rail and bus lines.
TRAVELING AROUND TINLEY PARK
Tinley Park is conveniently located in the heart of the bustling I-80 Corridor, with two interchanges into the village available off the interstate. I-80 provides a direct link to I-55, I-90, I-94 and I-355. The village is also in proximity to I-57 and nearby I-65 in Indiana, which connects the region to the southern states. For local travel, drivers utilize several routes, including U.S. 45, U.S. 6, U.S. 30 and Illinois 43.
The Village is situated along Metra’s Rock Island District line, which operates daily between Joliet, through Tinley Park, and into Chicago’s LaSalle Street Station. Through this rail line, commuters are provided the advantage of economical travel to Chicago within 45 minutes. Two stations are available to riders, with one located at 6700 South St. and the other at 80th Avenue.
Construction on the 80th Avenue replacement station is set to begin in the fall of 2009. Located just east of the existing facility, the new station will be distinguished by a unique clock tower feature, an indoor dining area/café, and an outdoor plaza capable of hosting a small event. The addition of the new station was a joint decision between the Village and Metra “that was approved in conjunction with safety improvements planned for the passenger platform,” explains Scott Niehaus, Village Manager. Completion is slated for the end of 2010.
Affordable public transit is offered through the Pace Suburban Bus Service, which operates daily routes to local destinations such as hospitals, schools, business parks, Metra stations and various shopping centers. Pace even offers an express route (Route 773) from the Daily Southtown lot (6901 W. 159th St.) to U.S. Cellular Field for select events.
The Village accommodates seniors aged 55+ and the handicapped with the Senior & Handicapped Bus Service, a cost-effective transportation option available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. While most services must be reserved 24 hours in advance, travel to doctor appointments will need to be established 48 hours in advance.
Visitors traveling to and from Tinley Park find great convenience in its access to Chicago’s two leading commercial airports. Midway International Airport is approximately 30 minutes from Tinley Park, while O’Hare International Airport can be reached within 40 minutes via I-57 North to I-90 West. General aviation, corporate travel and private charter services are readily available through both the Gary/Chicago International Airport, located approximately 30 minutes to the east in Gary, Indiana, and Lansing Municipal Airport, a 20-minute drive from Tinley Park.
