Welcome to Tinley Park
Recently, the U.S. Department of Commerce awarded the Village of Tinley Park with the Excellence in Economic Development award. The village of nearly 60,000 competed with other finalists San Antonio and Los Angeles to win the prestigious honor. How did a south suburban Chicago village outperform two major U.S. cities with a large amount of resources?
It did so by actively planning for a future that includes attracting new businesses that will broaden the already vibrant economy, building new housing to accommodate the growing number of residents who are attracted to the area and expanding cultural and recreational opportunities.
Although fervently striving for a progressive future, Tinley Park is committed to preserving those assets upon which its strong foundation has been laid: historic structures and solid Midwestern values that maintain its characteristic hometown atmosphere. The community’s values are reflected in its expansive downtown, which successfully joins modern design with old-time charm and public plazas.
Old-fashioned street lamps illuminate the downtown district that bustles with shoppers, commuters and diners who enjoy Tinley Park’s balance of personality and progressiveness. As part of an annual public art project, benches adorned and painted by local artists grace the sidewalks and offer a place where people can sit to enjoy the scenery.
A downtown redevelopment project (left) that will feature condos and a movie theatre has been approved and will invigorate the area with new residents, shoppers and tourists. The recently renovated Metra Commuter Station on Oak Park Avenue sends passengers anywhere from Joliet to Chicago, proving that it is possible to have both urban accessibility and suburban tranquility.
Residents and visitors alike are warmly welcomed to make use of all the village has to offer: a superior school system, a successful business/industrial corridor and housing in a range of prices and styles. The quality of life in Tinley Park is further enhanced by thousands of acres of forest preserves that create vistas of scenic greenery and places to hike or bike.
The Village of Tinley Park is working had everyday to expand and enhance their unique assets. They’ve already shown themselves to be doing so more effectively than any other place in America. Their past is not forgotten and the future looks bright.
