Education

A glowing candle in Tinley Park’s village seal represents the community’s belief in the power of education to enrich peoples’ lives. It also reflects the value placed on learning, whether a student is in pre-school, high school, college or pursuing post-graduate studies. Whatever their age or phase of life, residents of Tinley Park have access to exceptional educational opportunities.

Thirty award-winning schools and educational facilities within its borders are further testament to education’s preeminence in the community. The village’s convenient location allows access to dozens more colleges and universities in the southern and western suburbs and the city of Chicago. Students from elementary school and up are encouraged to actively engage in a wide range of learning opportunities and strive for excellence.

Higher education is just as important to Tinley Park residents. Moraine Valley Community College in nearby Palos Hills is one of the largest community colleges in Illinois, while South Suburban College, Joliet Junior College and Prairie State College all welcome eager students.

Several high-caliber educational institutions have opened branch facilities in or near Tinley Park. The DeVry Institute of Technology offers students bachelor's degrees in electronic engineering, computer information systems and telecommunications management. The Keller Graduate School of Management offers seven master's degree programs. St. Xavier University's campus in Orland Park offers a wide range of undergraduate classes along with master's programs, and certificate programs in nursing, education and business. Romeoville-based Lewis University has a new satellite campus along the I-80 corporate corridor as well as at Tinley Park and Andrew High Schools.

Tinley Park Public Library

Whether by book, compact disc or DVD, the vast resources provided by the Tinley Park Public Library speak volumes about the village’s superior quality of life.

Situated amidst rustic wetlands, the state-of-the-art red brick Tinley Park Public Library is also a peaceful place where people gravitate to learn and take part in many other activities designed to expand their minds and experiences.

Visit the library in the morning and you are likely to find children listening intently to a story. Later in the day, teens may gather in an activity room to decorate T-shirts or take part in a book discussion group. Adults feel at home at the library, too. They may be there to listen to an author discuss a new book, take part in a cooking class, choose a compact disc or DVD, or quietly study.

If that’s not enough, the library provides even more, going beyond its four walls to bring patrons what they need. The library is part of a larger Suburban Library System that allows patrons to borrow materials from more than 85 other libraries. Don’t have time to make it to the library? Let it come to you when the bookmobile makes one of its 90 weekly stops.

The TPPL is quietly becoming a trendy hangout for Tinley Park youth, with the introduction of the Café Ole coffeehouse and the new Young Adult program room, The Loft. Those popular amenities aside, bibliophiles of every age will continue to be drawn to the library for years to come as a place for social and literary growth.
