Illinois Route 3 is in the process of being relocated to the west side of Waterloo. When completed, this route will provide relief from traffic congestion at peak drive times and ease access to residential and commercial areas of the city.
In addition to the new chain stores that have opened in town, Waterloo has a strong, historic downtown business district that has many retail establishments. Neighborhood taverns serve family fare, and service industries cater to aVariety of needs. The downtown area is anchored by the Monroe County Courthouse and annex, Waterloo City Hall, and several financial institutions. Retailers and property owners downtown are supported by Mill, Market, & Main, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to the economicViability of the citys central core. The city is also actively involved with industrial development in an effort to capitalize on light-industrial zoned property on the main transportation arteries. Opportunities for light industrial parks and tax-increment financing districts are also under review.
The entire family will enjoy the many beautiful parks owned and operated by the Waterloo Park District. Konarcik Park, on 60 acres east of Waterloo on the Konarcik Park Road, has three pavilions, a crystal blue lake with fishing, and a ball diamond. The Park District also maintains two tennis courts, public swimming pools, playground, five ball diamonds and one soccer field. The Jaycee Ball Diamonds, one of which is on the northern edge of Waterloo on North Moore Street, hosts both womens and mens leagues. Acorns Golf Course is an 18-hole public facility on Ahne Road with restaurant, bar, and banquet facilities. On the western edge of Waterloo on the Maeystown Road are three city lakes where fishing is permitted. Lions Club Park, located in the Sunset Acres subdivision in the western part of town, has a public playground for the little ones. A sports complex featuring four baseball diamonds and two soccer fields, operated by the Waterloo Sports Association, is located on the West end of Illinois Ave. The Association also has baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, and T-ball organizations for boys and girls age five through 18.
