Yorkvilles
calendar is filled year-round with entertaining programs and events.
Summer brings Friday night "Music Under the Stars"
concerts to the Town Square Park with a mix of musicians performing
under the gazebo for an audience enjoying the program from their lawn
chairs. Both local talent, such as a high school chamber music group,
and professional musicians perform. Amateur musicians dust off their
instruments- or borrow them- to form the Community Band that marches
in the towns annual Fourth of July celebration. Bristol-Kendall
Firemen put on a full day of activities each Independence Day, beginning
with a morning parade and ending with a concert by the Yorkville American
Legion Big Band and a huge public fireworks display.
Another
of Yorkvilles annual attractions is the Riverfront Festival over
Labor Day weekend featuring a carnival, free concerts, craft show, food,
games and special events for everyone. The festival is held in, and
was named for, the beautiful Riverfront Park. Merchants, the Chamber
of Commerce and Countryside Shopping Center also present Trick or Treating
at businesses and a costume contest on Halloween and also Christmas
Walks each December.
Fox Country Players, a community theater group begun
in Yorkville presents two dinner theater performances each year. Local
residents round out the cast and crew for the performances.
The Yorkville Public Library- open seven days a week-
is home to thousands of resource materials. The library offers a wealth
of local and regional information for the professional researcher and
avid history buff alike. Preschool story hours are offered throughout
the year as well as a summer reading program for school-age children.
There are audio books, family orientedVideos, magazines, a local history
collection, a large print collection for the sight-impaired and an inter-library
loan system. The library also has photocopying, computer and typewriter
access. Recent improvements include a CD-ROM index for accessing thousands
of recent magazine articles.
The Kendall County Historical Society operates Lyon
Farm in rural Yorkville, one of the few actual working historical farms
in Illinois. It features a restoredVillage with a farm house, school,
town hall, train depot, caboose, blacksmith shop, and a general store
all moved to the farm from their original locations around the county.
The farm is open for special events and tours throughout the year. Historical
Society members also maintain the Chapel on the Green- the former home
of the Yorkville Congregational Church built in 1855 and now available
for weddings.

Yorkvilles
location on the Fox River boosts its reputation as a prime recreation
area. Anglers and boaters can take advantage of the natural beauty of
the river which meanders through the heart of the city. Yorkville is
well-known throughout the region as a prime starting point for scenic
canoe trips down the river.
The Yorkville Parks and Recreation
Department oversees year round fun at the Citys parks that
encompass dozens of beautiful acres. It offers a myriad of fun and
exciting programs including basketball, dance and exercise classes,
golfing, soccer, tennis, tumbling and even street hockey.
The FoxValley Family YMCA pool facility on East Main Street, also sponsors
aVariety of programs. It is complete with three swimming pools for
all ages, a bath house, snack bar and eating area. Swim lessons, water
exercises, lap swim and open swim are offered and the facility is rented
out for parties. Construction has begun on an indoor pool with 8 lanes
at the YMCAs main facility on Eldamain Road just west of Yorkville.
That site also includes an outstanding gymnastics program and other
recreation programs.
The Hoover Outdoor Education Center, owned
by the Boy Scouts of America, is a 406-acre camp with more than a mile
of frontage along the Fox River. It features group accommodations for
camping, dining, swimming, and lodging as well as an education building
with several meeting rooms. The center has instructional programs in
aquatics, arts and crafts, nature study and sports.
Weekend warriors can battle par on the
areas many public golf courses or battle each other on the local
public tennis courts. Local health club facilities are also available
to keep them in shape for their sport of choice year round.

Community
involvement and civic pride are an important element in the daily lives
of Yorkvilles citizens. The City boasts numerous civic clubs and
community organizations. These include the Chamber of Commerce, Garden
Club,VFW, Kiwanis Club, Yorkville Womens Club, Junior Womens
Club and Knights of Columbus. Other organizations
with active membership include the Kendall Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern
Star, American Legion, Lions Club, Rotary Club, American Association
of University Women, American Business Womens Association as well
as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and 4-H Clubs.
These diverse organizations are known for
the services they provide and for the many projects their members
undertake to make Yorkville a better community. Whether its
planting flowers to beautify the downtown area or holding a fund
raising dinner, these groups have always been ready to step up and do
their part.
