Montgomery County’s eco-nomic strength derives from a diversity of industries, a well-educated and dedicated workforce, and civic leaders committed to progress. Fifteen major industries that each have more than 100 employees specialize in a number of products and services which form the county’s industrial backbone. (Manufacturing employs more than 26,000 people in the county.) Union membership is in the minority. Some of our retail stores are owned by the second or third generation of the same family, while newcomers have also arrived on the scene to open specialty shops where milliners or tailors once plied their trades. They have formed strong partnerships with business and industry to provide greater opportunities here. Economic development teams provide the expertise needed to accommodate both the city and business partners in planned growth. Agriculture is part of the rural base that fuels the economy in Crawfordsville and Montgomery County. Located in the heartland of the farm belt, one third of the economy is dependent on agriculture.
