
Cultural activities abound in Daviess County, with preservation and presentation important to residents.
Abraham Lincoln visited the county a number of times before being elected the nation’s 16th president, and public reenactments of important aspects of his life are presented regularly.
Located near the original capital of the Indiana territory, a considerable amount of important American history figures in Daviess County life. Much of this past is captured at the Daviess County Museum on Main Street in Washington, which is run by volunteers and professionals from the Daviess County Historical Society. The museum’s growing collection includes rare artifacts from American military history and the railroad era as well as glimpses of past life in area schools, churches and businesses, some of which date to the 18th century.
Five miles south of Washington stands the Veale Creek Theatre, where performances organized by the Daviess County Veale Creek Players Inc. take place year-round. A variety of musicals, comedies and mysteries serve up delightful entertainment in the summer stock tradition.
The county is also home to concerts and performances by high school orchestras and thespian societies throughout the year.
