Festivals and Events

There’s plenty to do throughout the year in Daviess County, with a festival or special event reflecting the unique lifestyle and history of the region multiple times a month. Every Friday night near Cannelburg on the east side of the county, a legendary multi-stage auction takes place at Dinky’s, featuring nearly any item one can imagine.

During the fall, the White River Antique Show in Elnora draws enthusiasts to view operating antique tractors, farm equipment and other rarities. Over 1,000 people come from all over the Midwest for the nationally-known Amish Quilt Auction on Labor Day, designated a “must go” event by Quilter’s World magazine. Popular quilt auctions and Amish craft sales also take place at the Gasthof and the Daviess County Relief Sale (which benefits needy people in many regions) in the late summer and fall.

East Side Park in Washington is home to a splendid free driving tour of sparkling animated holiday lights each December, and the park is also jammed with visitors every Fourth of July for a free spectacular fireworks show. Downtown Washington hosts numerous events including an annual Christmas parade, homecoming festivals for area high schools and numerous other celebrations.

Montgomery hosts the renowned “Turkey Trot” every fall in which amusing races, concerts and other attractions bring together thousands of visitors. Gospel music is at its best in Daviess County, with professionals and local talent regularly performing at the Simon J. Garber Community Building in the eastern part of the county.

An annual Rail Festival celebrating the storied B&O “Shops” history in Washington is growing in popularity. For those interested in all things equine, the “must-see” event is the Standard Bred Horse Auction at Dinky’s every fall.

Like classic cars? The annual 20th Century Chevy Car Fest serves up the best of the muscle car era each fall along with a wide variety of restored specialty cars, trucks and other vehicles that shaped American automotive history.

For the outdoors enthusiast, competitive bass fishing, turkey shoots and all kinds of hunting (including mushrooms) take place regularly at the Glendale Fish and Wildlife Area and other areas in the county.
