As the 21st century advances, so does Daviess County. In the 19th century, Daviess County led the region out of the “Long Depression” of the late 1800s with the development of what would today be a $1 billion transportation hub centered on the railroad industry. With leadership in developing the WestGate @ Crane Technology Park next to the $2 billion world-class NSA military technical facility, Daviess County is again profoundly driving the region to new rural wealth creation and economic development.
With an aggressive focus on intelligent economic growth, the county seeks to actively reverse the chronic “brain drain” faced by many Midwestern states, instead creating jobs and opportunities to attract the best and the brightest back to the region. The county recognizes that the strength of a local economy lies in diversity, and accordingly focuses on training and job creation in advanced manufacturing and other economic sectors that employ a broad spectrum within the regional work force.
In a 21st century “flat world,” the high-tech transportation, distribution and logistics (TDL) industry figures prominently in the ability to efficiently deliver goods to global markets. With the construction of the southern Indiana link of I-69 through Daviess County, the region expects to reclaim its once-prominent position in the TDL industry.
Daviess County actively solicits and engages with Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and related capital formation for growth. Olon Industries, a Canadian-based wood product manufacturer, operates its U.S. headquarters and chief manufacturing operations in Washington, the county seat. The multi-national Grain Processing Center (GPC), which also operates plants in Asia and elsewhere outside the United States, holds a major stake in the county’s rapidly growing agribusiness sector. The county’s growing agribusiness focus is also driving major interest and exploration in biofuels, particularly the development of biodiesel.
Several small-to-mid-size manufacturing operations contribute directly to the healthy diversity of the Daviess County economy. Graber Post in eastern Daviess County produces wood products and prefabricated trusses that are in demand all over the region. Destination Yachts in Montgomery designs and builds literal floating custom homes as large as 3,000 square feet or more. These luxury floating homes have been the focus of a number of national publications and are regularly sold and delivered as far away as Arizona.
In addition to contributing directly to the Daviess County manufacturing work force, the county Amish produce bakery products and crafts that are sold through major retail and grocery chains throughout the Midwest.
