The University of Notre Dame in Daviess County?

It almost happened, as the original planners of what became the famous Catholic private college initially worked to set up a school at what is now St. Peters Catholic Church in Montgomery. But for the donation of some property in north central Indiana in the early 1800s, the Fighting Irish may well have become a local tradition.

As evidenced by the nearly 100 churches and places of worship in Daviess County, maintaining a spiritual balance remains paramount today for thousands of residents. Catholic and Protestant congregations figured prominently in the settlement of the region, and a deep faith still permeates the county.

Reflecting a positive diversity of belief, numerous denominations and religious groups are represented in Daviess County. These include Baptist, Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, and Episcopalians, as well as congregations of the Church of the Nazarene, the Church of Christ, Seventh Day Adventists and a number of other faiths.

Many Catholic and Protestant congregations in Daviess County that were established in the 19th century still meet in their original church buildings.
