Introduction

It’s the one place that can be reached in the shortest period of time by most people living in the United States. And that’s a good thing, because there’s plenty to do in Daviess County!

According to the first census of the new millennium, Daviess County holds the official designation as the Median Center of the U.S. population. With golden wheat fields and rolling hills smoothed by ancient glaciers, the 424 square miles of Daviess County puts forward a delightful lifestyle that can be both peaceful and progressive.

The Southern Indiana section of the NAFTA interstate will soon link the county with major continental trade opportunities, and a 1,000-acre technology park is rapidly rising out of former cornfields in the northeast. At the same time Daviess County advances its technological and economic progress, the region offers a rare glimpse into authentic Amish life. Quilt masters annually put in literally thousands of hours into visually stunning works of art. These hand-stitched Amish marvels attract international attention. Thousands of visitors from several states drive to Daviess County in summer and fall for a chance to view and bid on a priceless quilt that will hold its beauty for generations. Amish crafts and recipes complement the intricate quilts, as demonstrated by thousands of visitors sampling centuries-old cooking techniques in the many authentic Amish-style restaurants and craft ships around the county.

Visited on numerous occasions by a traveling Abraham Lincoln, the county holds an interesting place in American political history. As the casual visitor will discover, while Daviess County is no stranger to a 21st century global economy, its values and lifestyle serve up a fresh alternative in its towns ranging in size from 350 to 11,000. A near-fanatic dedication to high school basketball is evident in the fact that Washington High School captured no less than four state championships and has produced four students earning the coveted statewide title of “Mr. Basketball” and “Miss Basketball.”
