DeKalb Area Recreation
Recreational amenities in DeKalb County offer something for everyone. Golf is popular, with the three public courses of Bridgewater Golf Club East, Bridgewater Golf Club West and Garrett Country Club providing varied layouts and all the amenities of private clubs. Each has a fully stocked pro shop and a PGA professional on staff.
Nearby Chain O’Lakes State Park consists of eight connecting lakes and is a haven for lake-lovers. Boating, trail-hiking and visiting the nature centers are favorite activities. Other pastimes include camping, picnicking, fishing, skiing and swimming. Pokagon State Park is also a beautiful place to find outdoor recreation. It boasts a chain of three lakes as well as a toboggan run and numerous trails for hiking and cross-country skiing.
The YMCA of DeKalb County has two locations in Auburn and one in Garrett. It offers programs in aquatics, fitness and CPR/first-aid. Childcare, preschool and day camp services are available as are plenty of sports activities for both youth and adults. There is also a game room for young people called The Youth Filling Station; and Moms and Babes, a free program for teen parents.
The Auburn Parks and Recreation Department maintains the city’s parks and the community pool; they also provide recreational and educational activities such as tennis lessons, soccer and softball leagues, art classes and more. The Auburn Community Pool is open May through August; it makes both fun and exercise accessible with its waterslide, 50-meter heated outdoor pool, adjacent wading pool and concession stand. Swim lessons are also available.
Additionally, the Parks and Recreational Department maintains community and neighborhood parks and special recreation areas. A diversity of features are offered throughout the sites, which include: pavilions, picnic shelters, volleyball courts, playground equipment, horseshoe courts, grills, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis courts, sledding hills and basketball and shuffleboard courts. The Garrett Parks Department maintains a public pool and ball fields as well.
