
A wide variety of educational opportunities are available to people of all ages in DeKalb County.
Students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade are served by two school districts: DeKalb Central United School District, whose goal is “to assist each student to maximize his or her potential as a self-directed, lifelong learner and a responsible caring citizen,” and DeKalb County Eastern Community School District, whose mission is “to graduate lifelong learners with the knowledge, skills, and character necessary to become responsible, productive citizens in a global society.”

Schools in DeKalb CUSD are Country Meadow Elementary, James R. Watson Elementary, McKenney-Harrison Elementary, DeKalb Middle School, DeKalb High School, Waterloo Elementary and DeKalb County Alternative School. Schools in DeKalb County ECSD are Butler Elementary, Riverdale Elementary and Eastside Jr.-Sr. High School. The Garrett-Keyser-Butle Community School District maintains Garrett High School, J.E. Ober Elementary School and Garrett Middle School. In addition to the regular curriculum, the school districts are committed to providing a free public education to students with disabilities and offer a full continuum of services. Programs created to enhance the learning experiences of gifted and talented students are also accessible. The schools of these districts are proud to promote academic and extra-curricular success while offering unlimited opportunities to achieve personal goals.
Lakewood Park Christian School is another alternative for students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The school focuses on educational excellence, community outreach and spiritual growth. Along with a core academic program, athletics, fine arts and religious development are encouraged and supported. Additionally, daycare is available to parents.
Freedom Academy is a nonprofit organization providing adult continuing education. They provide quality, practical and relevant instruction in classes at community centers, libraries and schools throughout DeKalb County and other areas. Instructors are experts in their fields and have strong backgrounds built through extensive on-the-job experience. Many higher education opportunities are in close proximity. Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana offers general education courses at Ashley Community Center.
Indiana Business College has several campuses and focuses on career-oriented academic programs with opportunities to earn associate of applied science degrees, diplomas and certificates. Tri-State University is a private, non- denominational baccalaureate and master’s degree-granting institution. Emphasizing leadership development and practical skills, the university provides study in engineering, education, business and liberal arts and sciences in a small, personalized setting.
Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne is a joint campus of two internationally recognized Big Ten schools.
