Several housing options are available, including rentals and apartments as well as existing homes to new homes.Older homes are well-kept and modernized, while new homes are available from a variety of reputable custom home builders. Several new subdivisions are in progress, including Mill Ridge Estates, Country Club Estates, Manor Heights, Sycamore Bend and Heritage Acres.
Most new homes feature a modern ranch style and range in price from $150,000 upwards. Deer Run and Westwood offer the more affordably priced homes in Greensburg and Westport, ranging from $70,000 to $100,000.
Theres something fun for everyone in Decatur County. A progressive parks department offers 94 acres of recreational facilities, with planned and supervised programs year-round. Well-kept softball, baseball and soccer fields are spread out throughout the county. Outdoor lighted basketball courts and tennis courts as well as swimming pools, bowling alleys and three golf courses offer diversity for any athlete. Culture is the spice of life, but its not always desirable to travel an hour or more to enjoy "big city" shows. The Decatur County Arts & Cultural Council seeks to make culture convenient for area residents by importing high-caliber performance professionals. Each year the council provides an art series that brings in operas, symphonies and plays for local residents enjoyment. For music lovers, there is the seasonal Music and Arts in the Park series.
There are also opportunities to become directly involved with the performing arts. Tree County Players offers a forum for people with theatrical interests to develop their dramatic skills and present popular productions for the communitys enrichment. Thanks to these local thespians, area residents have been treated to such classics as Annie, Grease, South Pacific, Fiddler on the Roof, and many more. Decatur County also has its share of museums and special points of interest, including the unique Tree on Courthouse Tower Museum, the Carnegie Public Building, Round Barn on Moscow Road, 1890 Center of U.S. Population, Glacier Site, and a German Village at Millhousen. The Greensburg Public Library is state of the art with Internet capabilities and an electronic reference desk. Several exciting adult and childrens programs provide a multi-media learning experience for life scholars of all ages.
Decatur County has two school systems Greensburg Community School Corporation and Decatur County School Corporation that combined offer six public elementary schools, three junior high schools and three senior high schools all of which offer commendable student-teacher ratios. Both schools systems rank well above the state average for ISTEP total battery scores, and over 66 percent of high school grads go on to college or other higher learning. A strong high school agricultural curriculum provides excellent preparation for the communities agri-business interests. Technical prep and college prep paths are also emphasized. Parochial school choices provide another option for parents interested in private elementary schooling; the age requirement to start kindergarten at any of these facilities is 5 years old by June 1.
For mature students, an 18-college co-op offers classes in Greensburg through the high school, and both school systems offer a wide range of post-high school courses. Greensburg is home to several colleges (Concordia University and Indiana Wesleyan University) and students dont need to wander far to get a top notch education at Ball State University, Butler University, Franklin College, Hanover College, Indiana University and several Indiana University-Purdue University campuses. All are within a 60-mile radius. Extracurricular sports opportunities include volleyball, tennis, track, soccer, swimming, football, basketball, baseball, wrestling and gymnastics. For individuals with special needs, The Arc of Decatur County, Inc. provides education, job training, advocacy, residential services and employment placement designed specifically for those who are mentally handicapped or have related disabilities. Child care is abundant in Decatur County even on a 24-hour basis. Several facilities provide structured and nurturing environments for infants through school-age children. A child-care referral resource helps parents determine the right child-care option for each individual family.
