Because
Decatur County offers a wealth of interstate and highway connections,
many travelers jump off the familiar routes and opt for the scenic route.
Thats why the areas tourism professionals this year mapped
out five historical tours of the area, including the Westport Covered
Bridge, Round Barn, a tree tour (including the tree growing from the Courthouse),
and Glacier Landmark where the ice mass halted millenniums ago, leaving
the river on one side flowing in the opposite direction from its companion
branch. Visitors can access details at the countys web site (www.greensburgchamber.com)
or call the Chamber at (800) 210-2832 for a detailed brochure.
History lovers cant resist the County Historical
Society Museum, German Village at Millhousen, and the Amish farm sites.
Accommodations for overnight stays range from the romantic
aura of a bed and breakfast to chain hotels where the kids can splash
in the pool to campgrounds for outdoor adventurers.
Did
You Know?
The Westport Covered Bridge hoards several secrets:
It spans Sand Creek 130 feet from end to end.
Its actually owned by Decatur County.
Old-timers say floods have threatened the bridge many times but
its always survived. In 1913, a huge uprooted tree floating downstream
looked to spell the end of it until a sudden slowing of the current pitched
the tree underneath the bridge.
During its final two years of use, school bus drivers would have
their children get out of the bus and walk across the bridge. They feared
the extra weight could trigger an accident.
