graphicWhen a county is blessed with sunshine, rolling terrain and wide open spaces, people naturally want to take advantage of the recreational possibilities. Decatur County’s excellent parks department offers 94 acres of recreational facilities. Some offer a simple restful shade, picnic tables and playground equipment for the kids while others provide shelters, grills, basketball courts, paddle boats, volleyball setups and tennis facilities. Well-kept softball, baseball and soccer fields are spread out throughout the county, with many of the fields brand new. And, of course, the recently opened public swimming pool draws children and adults alike to its cooling excitement.

Golfers hit the links at two public courses – those who know members of the area’s private country club often buddy up to take advantage of its challenging holes, too – and sharpen their individual skills at our driving ranges and miniature golf facilities.

Thanks to the numerous creeks and ponds that dot the county, fishing rates high on the past-time scale as well. It’s common to see someone fishing off the side of the road in a scenic throwback to America’s youth. Residents in Lake Santee take advantage of this private community’s access to a large lake – wiling away summer days on their boat decks, runabouts and Sunfish sails or simply sitting beneath a shade umbrella on the beach.graphic

Hikers and bikers, too, find their trails meandering through the countryside with enough incline to provide healthy aerobic exercise yet gentle enough to tempt even the newcomers to these sports.

Those who crave adventure often find their way to the Greensburg Airport, where skydiving lessons guarantee to thrill even the bravest souls. The not-so-brave get their kicks watching the Rotary Club’s annual midget car races.

The Decatur County Family YMCA is one of the oldest nonprofit agencies in Southeastern Indiana. Established in 1915 as a men and boys’ organization, the YMCA has developed into a diverse organization, serving men, women, and children through programs including preschool, an after-school program, day camps, aquatics lessons and classes, wellness and aerobics programs and organized sports for adults and children. Following the mission "to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all," the Decatur Family YMCA offers its services to all people, regardless of financial ability.

On January 9, 2000, the YMCA opened a new, state-of-the-art facility.

The 39,000 square foot building includes a handicap-accessible L-shaped pool, therapeutic whirlpool area, dry sauna, wellness center, aerobic studio, regulation gym, indoor track and a preschool with three classrooms. The outside area includes a playground next to the preschool, a landscaped walking path, and soccer/baseball fields.
