LaGrange County celebrates the arts with a full schedule of cultural events. The LaGrange County Cultural Arts Council sponsors bring-your-own-lawn-chair performances of Shakespeare in the park and concerts ranging in rhythm from country western to polka. The council also hosts family-friendly festivals, including a 4th of July celebration at Topekas East Park. The Meeting House Musical Theater stages musicals, variety shows, and dinner theater at the Riegsecker Marketplace in Shipshewana. St. James Chapel, located on the grounds of Howe Military School in Howe, hosts concerts and recitals throughout the year. Visitors learn more about a group of the areas first settlers by making a stop at the Menno-Hof Mennonite Visitors Center, in Shipshewana. The center houses displays and exhibits, which interpret the lifestyles, history, and faith of Amish Mennonites and Hutterites. The Topeka Area Historical Society Museum is located at the Topeka Depot, which was built in 1893. The museum features exhibits depicting the areas history, railroad displays, and historic artifacts. The LaGrange County Library serves more than 30,000 patrons and has a remodeling plan on the drawing board. In addition to its main building, constructed in 1919 in LaGrange, the library has three branches located in Howe, Topeka, and Shipshewana. The library bookmobile heads down country roads and in-town streets to make books and materials available to every county resident. Knowledgeable staff members offer programs for both children and adults, provide assistance with research projects, and keep the shelves stocked with up-to-date materials.
