Government

graphicTown councils or boards of trustees are the primary governing bodies in towns and villages in LaGrange County. Meeting on a regular basis, the governing boards invite input from residents as they consider plans for everything from future growth and development to maintaining roads and expanding water lines.

The LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department serves and protects the residents of LaGrange County. Larger and busier towns like Wolcottville, Shipshewana, LaGrange, and Topeka benefit from an in-town marshal, often assisted by deputy marshals and reserve officers. Both emergency police and fire protection can be obtained by calling 911.

Volunteer fire departments serve unincorporated Brighton, Mongo, Shipshewana, Stroh, and South Milford. Johnson Township Volunteer Fire Department provides firefighting services for Wolcottville and the LaGrange Fire Department, located on High Street in LaGrange, provides fire protection for LaGrange and surrounding areas.
