Located
in northeastern Indiana, LaGrange County encompasses 380 square miles
and welcomes visitors and entices residents with idyllic farmland, 64
lakes, tree-shaded neighborhoods, and an old-fashioned rural character.
Small villages and unincorporated towns, with populations ranging from
less than 500 to 3,000 residents, have much to offer residents and weekend
sightseers. Home to the third largest Amish community in the United States,
LaGrange County is a place where horse and carriages share winding roads
and downtown streets with automobiles and kids on bikes. Shipshewana is
a busy shopping destination, home to the Shipshewana Flea Market and Auction,
numerous antique shops, and craft markets. Wolcottville,
on the southern border of the county, is the central business and shopping
location for year-round and summer residents who enjoy the six-lake Indian
Lakes Chain. A major business center, Topeka boasts a growing industrial
base surrounded by Amish homes and farms. LaGrange, the county seat located
in the center of LaGrange County, is home to some of the areas architectural
jewels; church steeples and the courthouse belfry dot the skyline and
the distinctively designed Carnegie Library attracts attention with its
multi-stepped exterior. Surrounded by lakes and forest preserves, unincorporated
Howe is home to Howe Military School, founded in 1884. Brighton, Mongo,
Stroh, and South Milford, unincorporated communities in eastern LaGrange
County, offer peaceful roads and wide-open vistas, enjoyed by residents
and businesses alike.
