Government
Michigan graphicCity is governed by a body of dedicated civil servants entrusted to maintain the highest standards, uphold the law, and enrich the lives of its citizens. A city council of nine elected members coordinates important community decisions with the full-time mayor. Operating in conjunction with the governing body are the City Controller, City Engineer, City Attorney, Planning Commission, Board of Public Works and Safety, Park Board, Sanitary District Commission, Port Authority Board, Redevelopment Commission and Economic Development Commission, among others.

graphicThe 94 sworn officers of the Michigan City Police Department are highly trained and organized into two divisions. The Operations Division includes the Uniform Patrol, Special Operations Group and Community Oriented Policing. The Services Division includes the Investigative Division, Division of Professional Standards, Records, Communications Specialist and Drug Task Force.

The bipartisan Police Civil Service Commission governs the department under a city ordinance merit system.

Firefighting and emergency services are handled by the 85 skilled members who staff the city’s five full-time fire stations. A bipartisan Fire Civil Service Commission supervises the department under a city ordinance merit system. The department is well-equipped to handle a variety of emergencies with the latest equipment, including a 100 ft. aerial platform truck, a 65 ft. aerial Telesquirt truck, snorkel and pumper trucks, and specialized rescue and extrication 4x4s.

The department also is part of the LaPorte County First Responder program, with a First Responder/EMT Department that functions as part of the countywide 911 system.

Pride in its civic duty is one of Michigan City’s hallmarks and is evident everywhere, from the mayor’s office to the City Council, and the Police Department to the Fire Department. Holding the public trust in high esteem, these local officials provide first-rate service and professional security for the community, making it an ideal place to live, work and raise a family.
