The bipartisan Police Civil Service Commission governs the department under a city ordinance merit system. Firefighting and emergency services are handled by the 85 skilled members who staff the citys five full-time fire stations. The department is well-equipped to handle a variety of emergencies with the latest equipment, including a 100 ft. aerial platform truck, a 65 ft. aerial Telesquirt truck, snorkel and pumper trucks, and specialized rescue and extrication 4x4s. The department also is part of the LaPorte County First Responder program, with a First Responder/EMT Department that functions as part of the countywide 911 system. Pride in its civic duty is one of Michigan Citys hallmarks and is evident everywhere, from the mayors office to the City Council, and the Police Department to the Fire Department.
