The
three elected County Commissioners serve as the legislative body in charge
of regulatory powers and administrative affairs and are the custodians
of the county's "home rule" powers. The seven member elected County Council
has the ultimate decision-making powers regarding fiscal affairs. The
cities of Cannelton and Tell City operate under a mayor-council form of
government with a mayor and five member city council. The Town of Troy
operates with a town council president and five member town council.
Keeping the order in Perry County is effectively done with the help of 21 law enforcement officers and twenty-three part-time or reserve officers. Cannelton, Tell City and Troy maintain their own local personnel, while the Perry County Sheriff's Department serves the unincorporated areas of the county. The Tell City Police Department dispatches calls to the appropriate department through the county's 911 dispatch system housed there.
Calls for fire and emergency medical services also are routed through this central dispatch office to one of seven fire departments throughout the area and the award winning Emergency Medical Services unit that adjoins the hospital.
Utilities capable of serving all of the needs of prospective residents and businesses are provided by local government and private providers.
