Portage Community Hospital (part of the Porter Memorial Hospital System in Valparaiso) is one of several major hospital facilities in the area that attract physicians who graduated tops in their class. This 33-bed hospital offers emergency facilities and state-of-the-art advances like AMICAS Picture Archiving and Communication System to speed X-ray readings; Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy that delivers a higher dose of radiation directly to the tumor while sparing the normal surrounding tissue; a Congestive Heart Failure Telemanagement Program; and one of the most advanced treatment options for early-stage prostate cancer: prostate seed implant therapy, or "brachytherapy."
Other services covered by PMHS include cardiology, diagnostic imaging, joint replacement center, occupational medicine, oncology, orthopedics, rehabilitation, spine care center, surgery, testing, and Visiting Nurse Association. Open heart surgery, angioplasty, magnetic resonance imaging, LASER surgery, lithotripsy, and comprehensive rehabilitation therapy are all available without leaving the county. A heliport was dedicated in May 2003. More than 300 physicians are associated with this hospital system.
