Shelby County has four school districts - Shelbyville Central, Northwestern Consolidated, Shelby Eastern and Southwestern. The curriculum choices for students are extensive. In addition, Blue River Career Center offers college programs and technical training to secondary and post-secondary students. The total expenditure per student exceeds $4,000 annually in the county, and the teacher-student ratio is 1:18. Reports indicate the highest percentage of ninth graders consistently earn A's and B's, and an overwhelming majority of high school students continue on to various higher education programs. Shelby County is working to provide one of the first community colleges in Indiana to promote higher education and lifelong learning on the local level. William S. Major Hospital is an 89-bed facility located in Shelbyville. Recognized for its state-of-the-art facilities and experienced staff, Major Hospital meets Shelby County's healthcare needs.
