Spencer
County rests in the southern section of Indiana, along the banks of the
Ohio River. The east-west Interstate 64 defines its northern boundary,
while U.S. Highway 231 and state roads 161, 162, and 245 provide excellent
north-south routes connecting these towns in Spencer County.
Chrisney’s population of 600 has attracted industrial growth
attention around its borders, so expect that number to rise as employees
flock to the opportunities blossoming here. Dale is
considered one of Spencer County’s commerce hubs due to its close proximity
to I-64. Gentryville sits in the heart of the county’s
historical sites, and its 300 citizens concentrate on operating family
businesses. Grandview, a riverfront town, has experienced a
mini-explosion in residential activity this decade. Hatfield, which owes
its current flavor to a rail-line built through the community at the turn
of the century, currently explores a new sewer system in conjunction with
neighboring communities for future
growth. Reo - an acronym honoring Rockport, Evansville and Owensboro was
established in 1966 and has become the
location for the new South Spencer Middle School. Richland’s 700 citizens
represent the spirit of an agricultural community
at its finest, with a strong history of social events.
Rockport —the largest town with a population of 2,600 — is currently exploring
annexation to accommodate its growth. Santa Claus, Spencer County’s fastest
growing community, issued nearly 100 building permits in 1997. Other communities
on our map: Bloomfield, Buffaloville, Enterprise, Eureka, Evanston, French
Island, Fulda, Lincoln City, Mariah Hill, Midway, New Boston, Newtonville
and St. Meinrad round out Spencer County.
