Spencer
County is governed by a board of three commissioners known as the executive
branch of government. A seven member county council is the fiscal body
and also serves as the legislative body when that responsibility is not
delegated to the commissioners.
Early in 1990 the county government implemented the County Economic Development
Income Tax (CEDIT). This tax is dedicated to the county's much needed
road improvement fund. Just one quick observation and one can see the
pride and management ability of those who administer the county highway
department. In 1996, the county hired its first certified engineer. The
benefits likely from professional personnel can't be over-emphasized.
One of the most modern jails in the State of Indiana is located in Spencer
County as well as the most advanced, convenient, proactive solid waste
district in the state. Spencer County Solid Waste District's main office
is in Chrisney with eight convenient drop-off sites strategically spotted
throughout the county. Law enforcement in Spencer County consists of a
sheriff's department backed-up by several Indiana State Troopers and two
investigators. Rockport, Dale, Gentryville, Chrisney and Santa Claus pay
for city police force or marshal service.
Spencer County is blessed with an Emergency Medical, Emergency Management,
Police and Fire Departments second to none. The nine volunteer fire departments
in New Boston, Chrisney, Carter Township, Grandview, Jackson Township,
Luce Township, Rockport-Ohio Township, Santa Claus, and St. Meinrad give
up many hours of personal time for training, extrication, first responders
and firefighting. Equipment includes Jaws of Life, rescue vans, state-of-the-art
pumpers, grass fire rigs, tankers and ambulances.
