Southeast of Chicago
St. John is located in Lake County in the northwest corner of Indiana, approximately 24 miles southeast of Chicago, Illinois, eight miles from the county seat of Crown Point, and 20 miles from the southern tip of Lake Michigan. Ridges, swamps and dunes formed by ice ages appear throughout the county. Sand, clay and black soils were deposited by glaciers, creating conditions conducive to agriculture. Major interstates and several federal and state highways keep St. John connected to surrounding communities and the rest of the country. One of six Federal highways in Lake County, Route 41, represents a well-travelled route in St. John, where many of our local businesses, schools and medical facilities are located.
St. John residents have access to Amtrak passenger service to Chicago and other major cities countrywide. Unique to our area is the South Shore Commuter Train providing passenger service between South Bend, Indiana and downtown Chicago, touting over 12,000 commuters daily. An hour’s travel time puts our community in touch with Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and Midway Airport, offering daily flights to national and international destinations. Private or business aircraft avail themselves of Gary-Chicago Airport, Griffith-Merrillville Airport and Lansing Municipal Airport.
