The Native Miami called the river waapaahsiki siipiiwi, meaning "it
is a bright, white river." Early settlers called the river Wabash.
Wabash County and the City of Wabash were named after the Wabash River.
More than 165 years ago, the Wabash and Erie Canal was built to complete
the first great travel way between the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico.
The city that would become Wabash was founded along the Wabash River and
the Wabash and Erie Canal.
Wabash County is a
beautiful place to live with a great heritage, lovely parks and architecture,
specialty
shopping including several antique stores, and outstanding arts and culture
through the Honeywell Center/Ford Theater, Manchester College and Symphony.
Youth and adult sports are enjoyed at new sports complexes in Wabash and
North Manchester. In fact, there are a host of attractions and recreational
possibilities throughout Wabash County in all seasons of the year!
As you review this
booklet, please feel free to call the Wabash Area Chamber of Commerce
(260) 563-1168, or the North Manchester Chamber of Commerce (219) 982-7644*
for more information. The people of Wabash County welcome you and invite
you to find out why we say ... Wabash County is the epicenter of Hoosier
Hospitality!
