The newly created Altoona Area Historical Society strives to preserve Altoona and its surrounding communities’ rich heritage through the collection of local artifacts and records. Many events have taken place here on the streets of Olde Town Altoona and nearby. Historical preservation has begun in the Old Porter Building, which is now the home of the Society. Altoona is home to the recently founded Class Act Productions Community Theatre Group. This acclaimed children’s theater produces stellar plays including Three Little Pigs, the Wizard of Oz and Oklahoma Jr.!.
Nearby Des Moines boasts the theatrical group of The Playground. Established in 1919, the theater hails as the second largest community theater in the country, as well as standing as the sixth oldest continuously operating community theater in the nation.
