Ankeny’s namesake is Dr. John Fletcher Ankeny, who founded the town in 1874.
Following its incorporation in 1903, Ankeny received telephone service, followed four years later by electrical service. In 1940 the government established a munitions plant, and in 1947 John Deere bought it and converted it for its own use. When Ankeny officially became a city in 1961, its population was 2,964. Today, people are catching on to everything Ankeny has to offer as the population has exploded from 18,482 people in 1990 to 27,117 people in 2000 to 36,161 in 2006!
