Buena Vista County offers a variety of recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike. The city maintains almost 200 acres of public parks, along with tennis courts, basketball courts, horseshoe courts, volleyball courts, swimming beaches, a bandshell and several ball fields. Since 1981 Storm Lake has hosted the Great Iowa Balloon Race during Labor Day weekend.

One of the highlights of local outdoor activities is the Smile Lake Trail, a hiking, biking, rollerblading path along the shores of beautiful Storm Lake. If you get tired, stop and enjoy the Storm Lake Municipal Pool, open Memorial Day through Labor Day. It is located adjacent to the lake, a city playground, horseshoe pits, public docks, and boat ramp. The pool is equipped with two slides, a diving well, lap lanes, baby pool and concession stand. Other public swimming pools are available throughout the county.

Buena Vista County offers six golf courses challenging golfers of all ages and skills. Amenities include clubhouses, pro shop, lounges and rental carts.
