In America's Hometown we work hard and we play hard. Recreational opportunities abound, with everything from horseshoes to canoeing to slo-pitch softball leagues.

The Cedar River makes water activities like fishing, boating and water skiing a natural. The community also boasts two different public golf courses with a third just 10 minutes away, along with several very fine athletic complexes such as Sportsmen's Park (baseball, softball, tennis, outdoor basketball courts and outdoor ice hockey rink in the winter) and Lion's Field (swimming, baseball, softball, sand volleyball). The Lion's Field Municipal Swimming Pool is a modern complex complete with a giant water slide, while the Charles City Family YMCA offers everything from an indoor pool, gymnasium, indoor running track and racquetball courts to fitness classes, recreational leagues and a top-notch cardiovascular exercise room.

If you're more of a spectator, Charles City is a big sports town. We love our high school Comets, or watching our friends and neighbors in action in one of the many different recreational league activities. Charles City also hosts an annual high school all-star wrestling meet which attracts some of the top talent from the prep ranks before they enter college. America's Hometown also plays host to the Continental Amateur Baseball Association 9 & Under World Series each summer, in which as many as 16 teams from all around the U.S., Puerto Rico and Mexico vie for the CABA championship in some of the most stellar Little League baseball action you will ever see.

There's plenty of other entertainment activities as well in America's Hometown, including bowling, movies and video rentals, mini-golf, paddle boating, billiards and more. In addition, the Chamber of Commerce and Community Revitalization keep things hopping with numerous festivals and events throughout the year, highlighted annually by the big 3-5 day America's Hometown Fourth of July Celebration. There's also an annual Thresher's Reunion, Spookwalk at Halloween, Christmas lighting, the ÔCentury of Power' tractor festival, the Floyd County Expo and much, much more! If it's a little peace and quiet you're after, America's Hometown is well known for its many beautiful parks and green spaces. A recreational trail winds its way along the river, past many a perfect spot to fish, read a book under a shade tree or enjoy a picnic. Between the City of Charles City and the City Improvement Association, founded in 1902, America's Hometown has over 300 acres of park space.
