Mainstay of Floyd County Agriculture has always been a big part of Charles City and the surrounding area, with some of the nation's most fertile soil found here. In addition to helping feed the world, the area is treated to some of the finest and freshest vegetables around, grown right here at home. As of 1998 there were 910 farms utilizing almost 300,000 acres of land in Floyd County, 84 percent of which were individual or family operations. Another 6.5 percent of the farms were operated through partnerships. Corn and soybeans constitute the majority of the crops raised, while livestock operation includes cattle, hogs, sheep, turkey and dairy. There's even an ostrich and elk ranch just outside of town that's a must see. Did you realize ostrich is a red meat like beef, but with a nutritional value like chicken? That's not to say we don't feature some of the best pork, chicken and beef around as well. There's always something good cookin' in America's Hometown.
