When
we say America's Hometown offers big city convenience in a small town
package, we're not kidding. One of the big attractions of Charles City
is that for a community of just under 8,000 residents it offers an existing
infrastructure for a city of 10,000 or more. Charles City offers full-time
professional police, fire and ambulance service, something unusual for
many communities our size.
City
services also include an annual Ôspring cleanup' collection, curbside
brush collection, landscape waste landfill and some of the cleanest, best-tasting
tap water around. The progressive city government is led by five at-large
council members and mayor, along with a professional city administrator
and full-time city staff. Time and time again the council has shown a
willingness to do what it can in support of economic development and improving/maintaining
Charles City's quality of life. The city provides water and sanitary sewer
service to the community, while MidAmerican Energy provides electrical
and natural gas service.
Weekly
curbside residential garbage and recycling collection is also available
in Charles City. America's Hometown also serves as the county seat of
Floyd County, with the courthouse located just across the river from city
hall. A three-person board of supervisors governs the county government
end of things, with all of the elected county officials and county offices
conveniently located right in town. Both the city and county governments
work well together to enhance the service levels and quality of life in
and around Charles City. In fact, America's Hometown is home to a first-of-its-kind
joint venture in Iowa between city, county and state agencies with the
new Cedar Valley Transportation Center Ð a joint road maintenance facility
housing all three entities that ushers in a new era of government sharing
and cooperation.
