The Greater Clinton Region is strategically located in the center of North America along the Mississippi River, 120 miles west of Chicago and within a 500-mile radius of other major population/business centers including Minneapolis, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Detroit, St. Louis, Omaha and Kansas City. A well-designed transportation network, utilizing interstates/highways, rail, air and waterways, provides the region with a logistical advantage.

The Great River Road and the Lincoln Highway are two historic routes that pass through Clinton. The Great River Road provides river enthusiasts with 326 miles of dramatic vistas of “Old Man River” during all seasons. The Clinton area provides a great stopping point, providing a look into America’s past, present and future. The Lincoln Highway covers 13 counties in its Iowa leg — Clinton is the final Iowa stop.

Ground U.S. Highways 30 and 67 intersect and run directly through the city of Clinton. These highways, and nearby U.S. 61, provide direct access for the region to Interstates 74, 80 and 88. In addition, there are numerous state highways that offer local access for both trucks and passenger vehicles. The region is well served by the trucking industry, with more than three dozen trucking and support operations.

The Municipal Transit Authority provides public transportation. Buses are wheelchair accessible and special services for the elderly and handicapped are available. For more information on routes, scheduled hours of operation and fares, call 563-242-3721.

Rail The region is served by the Union Pacific, BNSF and Canadian Pacific Railroads, connecting us to virtually all parts of the continental U.S. New rail-served industrial facilities are under development which, when completed, will solidify the region’s ability to handle service to all North American markets and east and west coast ports.

Union Pacific Railroad has been part of the Clinton community since the early 1990s, when it began the process of merging with the Chicago and North Western Railway. Today, Union Pacific employs more than 120 people in Clinton and has a monthly local payroll that tops $700,000. Union Pacific has expanded its local capital investment in recent years with the upgrade of area track and the development of a new crew change facility at Low Moor. Union Pacific’s investment in these projects will exceed $50 million. The Clinton Region is an important crew change point on Union Pacific’s primary east-west transcontinental route, a stopping point for more than 200 Union Pacific locomotive conductors and engineers each day. Some 60 trains a day, loaded with coal, grain, ethanol, automobiles, consumer goods and other products, pass through or stop in Clinton.

Waterway With three active barge terminals, the area is also one of the busiest ports for barge traffic on the upper Mississippi River, providing an economic transportation link from the Upper Midwest to the lower Mississippi Valley and Gulf of Mexico. Grain comprises the largest commodity shipped, followed by coal. There are 11 navigation locks and dams on the river bordering Iowa, with Lock and Dam 13 closest to the Clinton area.

Air The Clinton Municipal Airport boasts the lowest fuel prices in the area and accommodates several hundred aircraft each month, from "crop dusters" to corporate jets. Founded in 1945, the Clinton Municipal Airport has a long tradition of supporting air transportation for the residents and businesses of Clinton County. With two paved runways, modern instrument landing systems, jet and avgas sales, hangar space, pilot supplies and a passenger lounge, the Clinton Municipal Airport and its dedicated staff are committed to supporting a variety of business and recreational aviation activities in the Clinton area.

The Quad City International Airport, only 35 miles away, has been recently upgraded and expanded to include a new passenger terminal, new taxiways, new parking areas and ramps. The airport provides passenger service to eight non-stop hubs. It also has a 10,000-foot runway that can accommodate international cargo. There are three cargo facilities for every available ramp and expansion capabilities. A number of air freight companies are located at the airport including Airborne Express International, BAX Global and Emery Worldwide. A Foreign Trade Zone and U.S. Customs Office are located at the airport enabling international inbound and outbound shipments.
