An example of a new expansion project that is currently under construction in Clinton and encompasses cutting-edge technology while being environmentally conscious is the ADM Polymer Company, a joint venture between Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) and Metabolix.

Upon start up, the facility will manufacture Mirel bioplastic. Mirel is created from corn glucose which is fermented with microbes to create the product. When an item made of Mirel is disposed, it will break down quickly under ordinary compost conditions. This makes Mirel a very environmentally friendly product, while also reducing the need for petroleum-based plastics. Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) is the world leader in Bioenergy and has a premier position in the agricultural processing value chain.

ADM is one of the world’s largest processors of soybeans, corn, wheat and cocoa. ADM is a leading manufacturer of biodiesel, ethanol, soybean oil and meal, corn sweeteners, flour and other value-added food and feed ingredients. Headquartered in Decatur, Illinois, ADM has over 27,000 employees, more than 250 processing plants and net sales for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2007 of $44 billion.
