From the establishment of the first mission by Father DeSmet in 1838, Council Bluffs - Iowa's Leading Edge - has offered religious sanctuary to a variety of faiths. In 1846, a group known as the Church of Latter-Day Saints (also called Mormons) sought refuge in the Council Bluffs area.
Fleeing religious persecution, they established communities and built numerous churches in order to practice their beliefs.
Since then, Council Bluffs has built more than 80 places of worship, representing a variety of religions. Several of the buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
