Attractions & Entertainment
There are many attractions and amenities to see when in DeWitt. The newest attraction is a reconstructed German Hausbarn, which houses the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce, DeWitt Development Company and a German Museum. This building was dismantled in Niebuell, Germany, shipped to DeWitt and rebuilt nearly 100 percent by volunteers.
Clinton County, Iowa, has one of the largest migrations of Schleswig-Holstein Germans in America, so it was very fitting that DeWitt, the center of Clinton County, would receive this historic building. It was rebuilt to look very authentic, right down to the ‘thatched’ roof. The museum, which contains items from the original home, plus other donated items, is a must see.
Also visit the Central Community Historical Society, which is filled with items and history from not only DeWitt, but the surrounding area. Explore your genealogy with one of the largest collections of genealogy records in Clinton County.
The Opera House Theatre, built in 1878, has been in continuous operation ever since. Current-showing movies can be seen seven nights a week with matinees on the weekend. The ‘Ol Majestic Players present live musicals and plays on occasion.
For over 40 years, from January through May, every other Tuesday the DeWitt Noon Lions club presents Travelogues at The Opera House Theatre to sold-out crowds. A travelogue is a show of vacations taken from all over the world with different presenters for each week. From Spring through Winter you will find all kinds of entertainment for the whole family.
