Entertainment

DeWitt is proud that we offer quality and a variety of cultural entertainment generally found in larger communities. With many local talents, the DeWitt community can put on performances for everyone in the family. Almost every weekend is filled with events and activities to relax and enjoy. From the very young to adults you will find great entertainment.

One of our biggest attractions is the DeWitt Opera House Theatre built in 1878, has been recently renovated and is still used everyday as a movie theater and also as a playhouse. Central High School plays and musicals are also performed at this historic building. The Ol’ Majestic Players is an organization of local, talented individuals that strive to present at least one performance every year. The organization began as a formal group in 1986, deriving the name from the Opera House Theatre, formerly known as the “Majestic Theatre.” Since that time they have performed over 20 musicals and plays.

While you are in DeWitt, take advantage of our scenic community nestled in the heart of the Mississippi and Wapsipinicon Valleys. Established in 1841, DeWitt has many beautifully restored homes. DeWitt, the county seat from 1841 to 1869, is rich in history. If your taste runs to modern, plan to explore a county, which can boast two astronauts – David C. Hilmers from DeWitt and George “Pinky” Nelson, from Clinton.

You can always take a walk down memory lane when you visit The Central Community Historical Museum. This museum preserves a vibrant cross section of Midwestern life, from the tools of the Sauk and Fox Indians, to the possessions of the hearty pioneer families of the mid 1800’s, covering more than 150 years of history. The museum has hundreds of exhibits and also offers a genealogical research library. The museum is open March 1 through December 1 on Sundays and by appointment on other days of the week. Tours are available anytime year round, with no admission fee but donations are gratefully accepted to offset the cost of upkeep.
