Grinnell Chamber of Commerce

Education

Grinnell was founded on a commitment to educational excellence, and the city’s educational institutions continue to uphold that mission.

The Grinnell-Newburg School District (G-N District) encompasses 219-square acres and serves the communities of Grinnell, Newburg, and Oakland Acres. Approximately 1,850 students attend pre-kindergarten through grade 12. Two elementary schools (preK-2), one intermediate school (grades 3-4), one middle school (grades 5-8) and one high school accommodate students. An alternative high school is also available.

Grinnell High School functions on an innovative trimester schedule to offer a wide variety of elective courses while maintaining high expectations on core academic courses. The high school has more than 20 clubs and organizations and 19 varsity athletic teams. Typically, nearly 90 percent of graduates continue to post-secondary education.

Outstanding Christian schools and daycare facilities are also available.

Grinnell College is a leading liberal arts college. Bachelor of Arts degrees are available in 25 major fields, including humanities, science, and social studies. The campus is set on 120 acres, with 63 buildings (including 19 residential halls), and a 365-acre environmental research area. Approximately 1,400 students are enrolled at Grinnell College. Small class sizes (the student to faculty ratio is 9:1) ensure individualized attention and allow students a full college experience without getting “lost” in the system.

Iowa Valley Community College (IVCC) offers associate’s degrees in Arts and Science, as well as technical two-year degrees and one-year certificates through Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls and Marshalltown Community College. IVCC also offers continuing education programs, business training, and career development services.
