Business is thriving in Maquoketa. Its ideal location, convenient access to major expressways and airports and abundant resources all contribute to its strong and thriving business community. Maquoketa’s success in attracting industry has been the fruit of a strong local mobilization for development. Maquoketa boasts a highly skilled labor force, and a variety of jobs are available to residents.

The Maquoketa Industrial Park, an industrial park on Maquoketa’s east side, is home to large employers such as Dynagear Oil Pumps and Pacific Coast Feather Company, manufacturer of down and graphicsynthetic filled pillows, comforters and natural feather beds. The Highway 61 Industrial Park on the new four-lane U.S. Highway 61 houses Generac Power Systems, Inc of Waukesha, WI, a manufacturer of electric generators. Family Dollar Stores, Inc., has also relocated to the Highway 61 Industrial Park in a new 907,000-square-foot distribution center. The new industries are projected to employ between 700 and 900 people by the decade’s end. Other area industries include Wady Industries, manufacturer of steel paving joints and fabricated wire products; and DAC, Inc., a sheltered workshop for recycling and light assembly, among others. Other major employers in the area include Maquoketa Community Schools, Jackson County Public Hospital, Wal-Mart and Maquoketa Web Printing, to name a few.

graphicThe city has a history of effective recruitment, development of industrial parks, and use of initiatives. Participants in the economic development recruitment process have been MIDAS, the city’s economic development arm; The Contact Team, composed of the mayor, city manager, city council representatives; chamber/economic development director, bankers, and an economic development group representative; Timber City Development Corporation, a developer and marketer of industrial sites and facilities. By working together, the partnership has established a tradition of close working relationships between the public and private sectors.graphic
