Maquoketa is a community of 6,100 residents. Its progressive city government is led by seven elected council members and an elected non-voting mayor. In turn, the council employs a professional city manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the city. The city has been very proactive in its willingness to support economic development and improve and maintain the quality of life in Maquoketa. A recent City Hall building is evidence of the communitys commitment and pride.
Maquoketa even has its own municipal electric utility that generates electricity from two facilities; Power Plant #1 is downtown and houses an assortment of generators capable of producing up to 16,950 kilowatts upon demand, and Power Plant #2, commissioned in the summer of 2001 and rated conservatively at 7,200 kilowatts, is located on a 1.8 acre site within the citys new Highway 61 Industrial Park. Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative provides electricity to the areas immediately outside the Maquoketa city limits. The cooperative also services a portion of the Highway 61 Industrial Park. The remaining 70 acres of the industrial park will be serviced by REC with three-phase service. Maquoketa is the county seat of Jackson County. The courthouse is located on Platt Street. A three-person board of supervisors governs the county government. Both city and county governments work well together to enhance the levels of service and quality of life in and around Maquoketa. Cutting
Edge Media Maquoketa is home to cutting-edge media, dedicated to providing the community with the latest local and national news and information on community events. The Maquoketa Sentinel-Press has been serving the Greater Maquoketa trade area since 1854, and publishes a local newspaper every Wednesday and Saturday, a Buyers Guide every Wednesday and the Eastern Iowa Bizzzzy Bee, which is published every Saturday. The Shopper, a local advertiser, is delivered free every Wednesday to homes in Maquoketa and surrounding communities. Residents also enjoy Maquoketas local radio stations, KMAQ FM & AM, which broadcast from downtown Maquoketa. KMAQ AM has been on the air since 1958; KMAQ FM has been on the air since 1967. They are the only two radio stations that broadcast out of Jackson County.
