school

Superior opportunities for educational attainment at all levels are widely available to students in Marshalltown. No matter the age, preference or goal, when it comes to learning, there is an educational institution available to suit all students and their endeavors.

MARSHALLTOWN COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT (MCSD)

Enrolling more than 5,000 students in its pre-K through 12th grade curriculum, MCSD is committed to stimulating and preparing its young students to become valuable citizens in the ever-evolving society in which we live and work. The district is composed of 10 public schools, which includes six elementary schools (grades K-4), one intermediate school (grades 5-6), one middle school (grades 7-8), one high school (grades 9-12), and one alternative high school (grades 9-12).

Each building in the district is well-equipped with a media center that is brimming with extensive learning resources and advanced technology programming. Adding to these outstanding facilities is an exceptional preschool program. The district offers an outstanding dual language enrichment program, which begins in kindergarten at Woodbury Elementary School and continues through eighth grade at Miller Middle School. Other programs of note include the district’s talented and gifted programs, the ESL program, before- and after-school child care, and its comprehensive and compassionate special education program.

MARSHALL COUNTY EMPOWERMENT AREA

The Marshall County Empowerment Area was instituted in July 1999 as a citizen-led organization focused on supporting, developing and coordinating services geared toward enhancing the lives of young children (ranging from infancy to five years in age) and their families. The results of this pioneering approach will produce healthier and more motivated children, safe and encouraging communities, secure and supportive families, and nurturing child care environments.

PRIVATE SCHOOL OPTIONS

• Marshalltown Area Catholic School

An accredited nonpublic educational facility serving families of all religious backgrounds, the Marshalltown Area Catholic School is a wonderful alternative to the public education route. Small class sizes, a secure and nurturing learning environment, and exceptional educational and spiritual opportunities infused in all subject areas make up just some of the unique characteristics of MACS. The school is composed of two attendance centers— St. Henry’s, which houses child care, preschool and grades K-2, and St. Mary’s for those enrolled in grades 3-6.

• Marshalltown Christian School

Opened in 2006, Marshalltown Christian School currently enrolls students in grades K-5, with three teachers and one administrator making up the faculty and staff. The school’s small class sizes and Christian-based curriculum have helped students to be ranked one to two grades above Iowa Basic Skills testing. An excellent art program was instituted in the 2008-09 school year, and sixth-grade curriculum will be added for the 2009-10 school year.

IOWA VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT

The Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD) was organized in 1966 and has since transformed into a four- campus district that currently serves approximately 22 percent of local high school graduates in the area. Marshalltown is home to two of the four campuses— Marshalltown Community College and Iowa Valley Continuing Education.

MCC serves a diverse student population, composed of dual-credit high school students, undergraduate students looking to achieve immediate entry into the workforce and those beginning the path to graduate studies.

• Iowa Valley Continuing Education

IVCE has been an integral addition to the Marshalltown community, as it offers students the chance to acquire new skills, earn professional certification and relicensure, take part in job training, complete the GED, and participate in an array of personal enrichment courses. In the last year, nearly 22,000 local workers enrolled in the customized training program and approximately 3,275 students took advantage of the variety of outstanding community education courses.
