Welcome to Mount Pleasant, where tradition meets innovation.

Mount Pleasant is a blossoming community in southeast Iowa, a hub of culture and business surrounded by a postcard- worthy countryside. If you are locating in or returning to our area, we invite you to stop by the Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance office in our historic downtown, where you are assured of finding a warm smile and all the information you’ll need to feel right at home. We also encourage you to explore the community online through our recently updated website, www.mountpleasantiowa.org.

If history is your passion, Mount Pleasant is your place. A steady flow of legendary speakers in the mid-19th century, including Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth, helped earn the community the nickname “The Athens of Iowa.” A century and a half later, a visitor to the campus of Iowa Wesleyan College will stroll past a statue of Arabella Babb Mansfield, the nation’s first woman lawyer, and a uniform that once belonged to Dr. Peggy Whitson, the first woman to command the international space station. Both graduated from the college, as did Dr. Thomas Poulter, chief scientist on two of Admiral Richard Byrd’s Antarctic expeditions, and Dr. James Van Allen, principal investigator for the Explorer I and III satellite missions.

While science and law are admirable pursuits, Mount Pleasant also is justifiably proud of its agricultural heritage. This is most evident over the long Labor Day weekend, when thousands of visitors from across the country and around the globe pour into town for the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion. From the chug of countless antique tractors to the sight of a coal black steam locomotive pulling passenger cars loaded with laughing children, Old Threshers will warm the hearts of anyone nostalgic for a simpler time.

Even with our reverence for the past, Mount Pleasant remains focused on the future. Over a dozen large employers and hundreds of commercial and specialty enterprises keep the community humming with economic activity. Business people especially appreciate Mount Pleasant’s strong, engaged leadership and location at the intersection of two four-lane highways with six metropolitan markets less than a day’s drive distance. An ever-expanding list of amenities that includes an aquatic center, canoe and water trails, library and civic center, golf and country club, community theater and multiple sports complexes, ensure there is plenty of fun when the work day is done.

At the Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance, a partnership of the Mount Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce, Mount Pleasant Area Development Commission and Main Street Mount Pleasant, we are proud to work together to continue economic growth and prosperity in our community and the surrounding area. We invite you to come and discover why we are so proud of Mount Pleasant. Please use this guide to find the products and services you need while also supporting local businesses.

Sincerely,

Kiley Miller
