Centrally located in southeast Iowa, Mount Pleasant’s location is one of its greatest assets. Residents and businesses enjoy easy access in and out of the community via major highways, freight carriers, rail lines and airports.
Mount Pleasant sits at the crossroads of two major arterial highways—U.S. Highways 34 and 218. While U.S. Highway 34 travels east to west through the community, U.S. Highway 218 runs north to south. U.S. Highway 218 is also regarded as the “Avenue of the Saints,” due to the fact that the four-lane roadway links St. Louis, MO, and St. Paul/Minneapolis, MN. Additional highway systems can be found close by, providing connections to such major metropolitan areas as Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Omaha and Des Moines—all within one day’s drive from Mount Pleasant.
The community is also easily accessible by rail for both passengers and freight. Amtrak passenger service is readily available through Mount Pleasant’s historic station, situated just north of the downtown district. The California Zephyr line offers a number of stops between Chicago and San Francisco, and major freight railroads traversing the landscape of Mount Pleasant include the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, the Norfolk Southern Railway and the Burlington Junction Railway.
In addition to rail freight, Mount Pleasant is served by more than 70 local and national motor freight carriers, including truckload carriers, less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers and smal-package services.

General aviation services can be found at the Mount Pleasant Municipal Airport, which is equipped with a 4,001-foot-long hard-surface runway able to accommodate a variety of small- to medium-sized aircraft. A grass runway is also available for use. Aviators can take advantage of year- round access, fuel services, hangar facilities and maintenance services, along with executive charter offerings and professional flight instruction. Larger aircraft area supported nearby at the Burlington Regional/Southeast Iowa Regional Airport. Just 20 miles east of Mount Pleasant, the airport offers commercial airline service through Great Lakes Aviation, which provides two daily flights to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport and one daily flight to Kansas City International Airport.
