Mount Pleasant is fortunate to have hardworking, progressive leaders in place at City Hall. The City utilizes the Mayor/Council form of government, with a mayor, city administrator and a council of six. The City offers a long list of first-rate services for local residents and businesses that create an unequaled environment in which to live and work.
Public safety is the domain of the Mount Pleasant Police Department and the Mount Pleasant and Rescue Department. The police department includes a police chief, a lieutenant/criminal investigator, three sergeants, eight patrol officers and a full-time community services officer. The force is dedicated to the principles of integrity, respect, fairness and professionalism.
The fire department is also vital to ensuring safety in the community. Comprised of 26 volunteer firefighters, five volunteer officers and two supplemental reserve members, the department answers hundreds of calls each year.
The City’s Public Works Department oversees the road division, storm and sanitary sewer division, solid waste division, waste water treatment division, cemetery division and airport division.
Mount Pleasant’s Park and Recreation Department strives to enhance the standard of living for residents through an impressive, well-maintained system of public parks, facilities and recreational programming for people of all ages. The department oversees 10 park sites and a golf driving range.
Additionally, the City offers a full spectrum of utility services. Mt. Pleasant Utilities, a city-owned municipal utility governed by a five-member Board of Trustees, is the primary provider of water and electricity. Access Energy Cooperative also offers electricity in certain areas of the community. Finally, Alliant Energy is the designated natural gas provider for both residential and business customers within the city.
