Newton sits in central Iowa, a mere 40 miles from Des Moines, and is positioned within the center of Jasper County while serving as the county seat. Nearby communities include Kellogg, Sully, Baxter, Monroe, Colfax and Prairie City.
The community is easily accessible to several major highways—both Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 6 run through the city, while U.S. Highway 65 and Iowa Highways 14, 117, 163, 224 and 330 run throughout the county.
