At one time, the state of Iowa had been a major grape-growing area in the country. Two wineries are located within Newton—Sugar Grove Vineyards and the Jasper Winery. Sugar Grove Vineyards and Gatheringplace has 11 acres dedicated to growing both French-American hybrid and native American grapes. Guests can taste each wine, from Sugar Grove’s No. 2044 Red to the Grate White, with delicious cheeses and breads; as well as tour the vines. The Jasper Winery is equipped with 10 acres of vineyards filled with French-American grapes. Patrons are welcome to sit in the tasting room with a glass of wine and a variety of gourmet foods, take a tour of the grounds and even help harvest the grapes on August and September weekends.

Newton is also the site for the Iowa Speedway, a 7/8-mile track holding around 25,000 patrons, and several interesting museums—the Kellogg Historical Museum, Trainland USA and the Jasper County Historical Society Museum. Preserving the history of Kellogg, a town less than 20 minutes from Newton, is the Kellogg Historical Museum. The site holds six museums in one place—the two-story main museum, a factory/bank museum, a country school, a church and a blacksmith shop—depicting the town’s history through a number of authentic items.

Trainland USA is a toy train museum illustrating the development of railroads throughout the nation. The display area, approximately the size of two ranch-style homes, covers the advent of railroads over three separate eras. Located at 3135 Highway 117 North in Colfax, Trainland USA is not a site to be missed.
