Newton Outdoor Recreation

kayaking

From horseback riding and hiking and biking trails to fishing and golfing, the city of Newton has it. In addition, the area encompasses several park areas:

• Denniston Knolls Park
• Lincoln Park
• Thirty Acre Park
• Maytag Park
• Sunset Park
• Agnes Patterson Memorial Park
• Hillcrest Park
• Aurora Park

The local Amboy Trail Ranch holds 100 acres of trails and beautiful landscapes in Newton. The Ranch offers horseback trail rides, horseback riding camps and bird watching—the area has been home to several Great Blue Heron nests over the past several years.

A paved hiking and biking trail is available on the City Trail, while swimming pools are located at the Newton YMCA facility and the Maytag Park Pool. The Maytag Park Pool is equipped with two waterslides, a diving section, water basketball area, concessions and much more. The Newton YMCA also affords members a wealth of youth and adult activities including sports, a fitness center and health and fitness classes.

Campgrounds are accessible in nearby Kellogg at the Kellogg RV Park and Lake Pla-Mor, which boasts 40 acres of recreational land. Campers enjoy fishing at the privately-owned, stocked lake, which holds bass, bluegill, crappie and walleye.

golfing

Golfing is also a strong pastime in Newton. The Newton Golf and Country Club is hailed as one of the finest nine-hole courses in the state. The private club not only affords a nine-hole golf course, but also a driving range and extensive pro shop. Westwood is an 18-hole municipal course, located just two miles west of Newton. The Iowa Golf Association rated the course one of the top 10 courses in Iowa.

The course has a long history. In 1927, Bud L. Maytag constructed the front nine holes. The front nine was redesigned in 1988 by Eric Larson, an architect originally from Newton.

The pro shop also offers a complete line of golf equipment and a snack bar. Lessons are available.
