Newton has a thriving arts community! We are a community passionate about encouraging awareness, appreciation and creation of the arts.
The Newton Community Theatre, situated at 1701 South 8th Avenue East, has been the area’s signature theatrical entertainment venue since 1963 with its first production, Bus Stop. Since that time, the theater has produced a wealth of theatrical offerings including the well-known productions of Godspell, Doubt, Annie, The Sound of Music, Miracle on 34th Street, Wizard of Oz and Proof. NCT has won the 2009 & 2011 Iowa Community Theatre Festival and traveled onto the regional competition. The Newton Community Theatre exists to bring quality theatre productions to the communities of Jasper County, sharing their talents and resources to make theatre a rewarding and educational experience for all. Please visit their website at www.newtontheatre.com for more information.
Live music can also be found in Newton, either seasonally at the Maytag Bowl, Sugar Grove, or year-round at venues like the First Avenue Speakeasy which features live jazz and blues. Concerts and special events will always be listed at www.experiencenewton.com along with a community calendar featuring links to other organizations promoting the arts.
The Arts Connection Inc. supports the broad spectrum of endeavors that embrace, enhance and encourage artistic expression in Jasper County by individuals and the public at large. They have a website www.artsconnectioninc.org that is regularly updated. Their signature event is the Iowa Sculpture Festival held the second weekend in June.
The Center for Arts and Artists offers art classes throughout the year in varied media giving the community an opportunity to try something new. They also serve as a home for many local artists to work as well as display their work. Established in 2007 it’s an artistic hub where people gather to inspire one another to be creative.
You can even find art classes at the local YMCA including clay art, wheel art, outdoor digital photography, drawing and painting, literature and music. For more information on these offerings, please visit the Newton YMCA website at www.newtonymca.org.
